The Wonder of the 100% Coconut Oil Soap Bar

In a few short months my 100% Coconut Oil soap bar has become my number one best seller. I have to admit it doesn't look very pretty and it has no fragrance at all. Sorry if you were thinking you would get that tropical beach, suntan lotion, coconut cocktail aroma. But, what it lacks in scent and beauty it makes up for in super cleaning and super moisturizing for your skin and hair. 100% coconut oil soap does, in fact, break all the rules of soap making. Firstly soaps made from a single oil or butter tend not to perform as well as those that have a blend of oils chosen for their specific soap making and skincare properties. Secondly using coconut oil over 20/30% can often make a soap bar too drying and thirdly Superfatting (I'll explain more about this later) over 10% can cause your soap to go rancid and spoil far too quickly. Having taken all of this into consideration and breaking a few soaping rules my 100% coconut oil bar was born! So, superfatting, without delving into the world and words of soap jargon (and boring you in the process), many soap makers like to have some extra oils in their soap that are leftover after the oils have gone through the soaping process therefore any oil left in the soap is called 'superfat'. It is the 'superfat' in handmade soap that makes it highly moisturizing, non drying but unfortunately does shorten it's shelf life. That is why if someone gives you a lovely bar of handmade soap you should use it! It's soap not an ornament!  So, normally a handmade soap maker will 'superfat' at 5 to 7.5% (sometime even higher) but with 100% coconut oil I superfat at 20% and it is this that counteracts the drying effects of coconut oil in soap and makes it super duper moisturizing. To add to that coconut oil has a long shelf life so is perfect for superfatting. Following these rules in my recipe I am left with a rock hard soap bar that lasts ages, a heavenly lather and super moisturizing properties with no drying the skin. To add to that it also works as a great shampoo bar. Coconut oil is rich in anti-microbial properties, lauric acid, and medium-chain fatty acids that strengthen hair, condition the scalp, and help to regrow hair. ... Rich in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, the nourishing benefits of coconut oil for hair keeps your hair strong, shiny and looking great!
